Extractions Q & A

Why Are Tooth Extractions Needed?

There are a number of different reasons for tooth extraction, but perhaps the most common is tooth decay. When a tooth becomes so significantly decayed that a restorative treatment won't correct the problem, extraction may be the best option. If a seriously decayed tooth is not extracted it can spread decay and damage to other healthy teeth and gums. Another reason for teeth extractions is accidents. If the tooth can't be returned to its previous state it often needs to be removed. Young people who are preparing for orthodontia, like braces, may need to have some of their teeth removed if their baby teeth take too long to fall out on their own. Wisdom teeth, the extra molars at the very back of the mouth, are often extracted if they cause pain or crowd the other teeth in the mouth.

How Can Patients Prepare For Tooth Extraction?

For patients who have a weak immune system due to an illness or who currently have an infection, the dentist may prescribe antibiotics. These must be taken prior to the extraction and may be taken for a period of at least several days afterward, as well. Patients should never smoke on the day of the tooth extraction. Depending on the type of anesthesia being used, patients may also need to refrain from eating or drinking for a specified period of time before the extraction.

What Can a Patient do to Recover From a Tooth Extraction Quickly?

The best way to recover from a tooth extraction quickly is to closely follow all aftercare instructions from the dentist. Generally, this includes avoiding rinsing the mouth out for the remainder of the day after the tooth extraction, eating a soft diet for a day or so, and using cold compresses on the outside of the mouth to alleviate pain. Over the counter pain relievers or prescription pain relievers may both be helpful for short term pain as the area heals.
