Root Canal Treatment Q & A

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a dental technique that is designed to preserve a damaged tooth. When the inner layers of the tooth become damaged, it can cause serious pain for the whole tooth. Those inner layers, known as the pulp, are composed of nerves and blood vessels that are highly sensitive. If tooth decay, a crack in the tooth, or some kind of trauma causes the pulp to become infected, it can be removed in a root canal. The root canal takes the damaged pulp out and leaves the exterior of the tooth in place.

What Are the Signs of Damaged Tooth Pulp?

The most obvious indicator that a root canal may be needed is serious tooth pain. This pain is most often noticed when a person is chewing or drinking, but it can occur at any time. In particularly bad cases, the tooth pain is nearly non-stop. Sometimes people experience a small degree of swelling around the tooth, as well. The gums may appear redder than usual around the tooth that needs a root canal. These symptoms will only worsen if not dealt with, so patients experiencing these things should see the dentist as soon as possible.

How Does Root Canal Therapy Work?

Root canal therapy requires 2 visits for most patients. In the first visit, the pulp will be taken out of the tooth and a temporary crown will be placed over the tooth to protect it. The patient will typically return in a couple of weeks to have a permanent custom crown placed on the tooth. This custom crown is made to the exact dimensions of the tooth and will restore it to full functionality. Crowns can last for an average of 10 to 15 years in most patients, and they need to be cared for in the same way that the natural teeth are.
