Teeth Cleaning Q & A

What is Included in a Dental Exam?

A dental exam is a time for the dentist to evaluate the patient's overall oral health. If the patient has recently noticed teeth pain or other dental problems like bleeding from the gums, that issue will be investigated during the exam. The dentist will also watch for emerging issues, even those that are not advanced enough to show any symptoms yet. During an exam, every tooth is checked, and the gums are also thoroughly evaluated. If the dentist finds cavities or other issues, x-rays may be performed as part of a dental exam. Some patients have a dental cleaning after a dental exam, as well.

What is a Dental Cleaning Like?

A dental cleaning addresses each tooth in the mouth individually. Teeth are not only cleaned completely but also polished for a bright smile. During the dental cleaning process, the dentist will remove plaque or tartar that has built up on the teeth's surface. Even though a person can greatly improve their oral health by brushing and flossing every day, those things just can't do the in-depth job that a dental cleaning can do. The dentist can access areas of the mouth that the patient has a hard time cleaning properly, for example, the back molars. For most people with good oral health, a basic dental cleaning is sufficient, but for people with a significant level of periodontal disease, a deep dental cleaning may be necessary.

How is a Deep Dental Cleaning Different?

A deep dental cleaning is for people who have developed the later stages of periodontal disease. In this type of cleaning, the dentist will need to scale the teeth and to do root planing. The goal of scaling and root planing is to eliminate high levels of tartar and plaque. While this type of cleaning is more complicated, it is very helpful for people who need it as it can keep damage from moving into other healthy areas in the mouth.
